 Kwanzaa Homecoming - Excerpt

Pain filled his eyes and he looked away. He started to speak, but the words caught. Long seconds ticked by.

He finally cleared his throat and looked at her. "What kept me going these long months was the thought of you. Somehow I knew that you'd always trust in me, and believe that I could do none of those things. In my heart I knew that our love was stronger than anything, and nothing could destroy it."

Confused, her emotions warred, yearning and anger, hurt and bewilderment, fear and desire. Anger won. She had yet to hear him take any responsibility for what he had done to her, and to Sylvie. She waited, not trusting herself to speak.

"There are things about me that you never knew. I did what I had to do," he said.

That was it. She exploded upright and swung her hand against his cheek with all her strength. She wanted to scream every foul cussword ever invented at him and even that wouldn't be satisfying enough. How dare he dismiss two years of agony with, I did what I had to do. Damn straight there were things she didn't know about him. She drew back her hand to swing at him again, but he grabbed her and pulled her against him. The feel of his warm, familiar body against hers shocked her into stillness.

"I'm sorry, baby. There's nothing I can say to make it better, is there? I'm so sorry I let this happen to us."

At those words, she gasped at the pain. Tears filled her eyes and sobs filled her throat.

He rocked her back and forth, crooning the love-words he'd murmured to her so long ago. Pleasure and pain flooded through her, cradled in those arms she'd thought would never hold her again. If only time could be rewound to three years past when things were right, and their love had flamed fierce and strong.
