Teach Me To Love - Chapter 13 Part 3

Carne stood next to him and whatever he was saying to Derrick was lost because Derrick was not listening to it.
          “Who was she?” Carne asked.
          “Someone special,” Derrick said.
          “You know, bitches are bitches.”
So angry, Derrick hauled off and punched Carne in the mouth. “Don’t’ you ever call her that again!” he seethed.
Carne looked up from the ground where he had fallen shocked. “Fine man. That’s all you had to fucking say. You didn’t have to hit me like that.”
Derrick swore vehemently under his breath. He couldn’t deal with this shit right now. Not when his emotions were going crazy. Not when he wanted to hop that train with her and leave this place to be with her.
“She broke your heart, man?” Carne asked.
“Let’s just say she meant a lot to me, Carne.” Derrick went into the house and straight up to his room with Carne behind him.
“And you just going to let her go like that?”
“I have no choice, Carne.” Frustrated, he pounded his fist in the nearest wall and slumped on the bed staring at the crack on the wall he had just made from the impact. “I have a strange feeling I won’t be seeing her again.”
Carne reached in his breast pocket and pulled out a joint. “Let this ease your pain, man. This is going to take all that pain away.”
Derrick had never tried drugs in his life, but the pain was so deep in his soul, he was willing to do anything just to not feel so horrible wretched. “What is it?” he asked. “I know it’s not just the leaves in there, knowing you.”
His stepbrother smiled wickedly. “I put something in there to spice it up that will make you feel read good.”
Getting a lighter out his pocket, Derrick took the joint and lit it, taking a long drag and feeling good all over as he held it inside. He gagged a little and had to blow it out quickly before he choked, but that didn’t stop him from taking another drag on the joint. He let his mind drift off to erotic pleasure of dreams with Rachel. He knew this would be the only way to be with Rachel. The only way...
As his high climbed, he asked, “What’cha doing here again, Carne?”
Carne took a swig of a flask from his inside jacket pocket. “I heard my old man is having another birthday party. I figured his only son should be here.”
“You don’t give a fuck about your old man,” Derrick jeered. Just because he was getting high that didn’t mean he couldn’t comprehend that Carne had another motive for being back in Davenport.
“Truth be told, Derrick,” Carne said. “I need some money more immediate than what I thought I did and I think my old man’s gonna give me my share of what is owed to me.”
“Earnest don’t have no money,” Derrick giggled. “Except in his insurance policy. What are you going to do? Kill him?” This thought sent Derrick in a round of chuckles to himself.
Carne encouraged Derrick to take more drags of the joint. “Just get yourself where you want, Derrick, and we’ll talk about it some more.”
Derrick let the power of the drug take over.

Teach Me To Love - Chapter 13 Part 2

By the time she got out of the school with a bag full of personal things, she was exhausted. Tonya promised to mail her personal items from the school to the address Rachel had provided her.
It was less than an hour before she had to get to the train and as she walked through the teacher’s parking lot one last time, she knew she would miss this place and the rewarding feeling she received from being a teacher.
Sitting on the hood of her car was Derrick. That cold ominous look was in his eyes, but she could tell it wasn’t really directed at her. It was more at what she was doing.
“You don’t have to go,” he said when she stopped in front of him.
“Get in the car, Derrick. I’ll take you home and we can talk on the way,” she said. “We shouldn’t speak here.”
He did quickly as she ordered.
“I’m not going to try to explain things to you. They’re more complicated than even I understand. I think you already have a feeling what’s going on.” She wasn’t going to tell him the real deal because she felt he would become very angry. “My husband has things to do in Canada and as his wife I have to be with him.”
“No, you don’t,” Derrick refuted. “You could stay while he goes. He barely pays attention to you. He won’t even miss you.”
“I can’t stay, Derrick. No matter how I play the cards, I can’t stay. I have to go. He wants the children with him and I can’t be without my children.”
Incensed, he sneered, “What if I killed him for you, Rachel. You just say the word and you’ll never have to see his face again.”
It was a good thing she had been stopped at a light when he said this, because the look of fury in his eyes terrified her. Did she really know this young man? He showed people what they wanted to see, but had he ever really showed her his true nature.
“I won’t say that. Derrick. You won’t sacrifice your life for me. You won’t sacrifice your life to any woman! You were meant to be great; to do something with your life that will lead to better things. I know this. I feel it here.” She touched her chest.
He put a hand over hers that was on the steering wheel and drew her palm to his chest. His touch was gentle despite the fury on his face. “But I don’t want to live without you.”
Rachel did not want to bring up that he was just infatuated with her. It would lead to another argument regarding his true feelings. Coming to the front of his house from following his instructions, she turned into the driveway. The sun was just going down and she pulled her visor down for shade against the orange winter sunset.
Time was running out for them, but it was better that it ended this way.
“Derrick, there’s going to come to a time in your life, when you’ll see that this is the best decision – for both of us. There will be other women in your life. You’ll find some to be more extraordinary than the ones you’ve met so far. And one you’ll find so precious in that you’ll marry her and be a happy man. More happy than you could ever be with me. Now go, and understand that our paths were never meant to be joined. Our deck of cards are too complicated to be played together.”
He stared into her eyes for a long moment, before he said, “Fine, I’ll go but you’ll see this isn’t the end of our story, Rachel. This isn’t the end of what we could have.”
Rachel didn’t live in his dream world as much a she wanted to, yet she allowed him to think she accepted these words as he prepared to get out the car.
“One more thing, Rachel, before you leave,” he said pulling her hand so that her body had to lean forward towards him.
She knew what that look in his eyes mean and couldn’t deny that she wanted to give him what he needed. “Derrick, please.”
“Just one more,” he said, cupping her face gently. “Pretend there’s no one in this world, but us. Just for a minute, let’s pretend that there wasn’t a husband and you weren’t a mother and I wasn’t your student.”
Rachel wanted to kiss him more than anything and she conceded pressing forward and softly letting her lips savor the deep sweet taste of his. She wanted to remember everything about him and put all the desire and passion she had been suppressing into the kiss. A deep groan came from him, reverberating through her head as their tongues wrestled and their bodies pressed together despite the awkward position in the car.
A knock on the hood abruptly ended the kiss and Derrick looked to see who it was while she coward her face in his broad shoulder.
“My stepbrother’s hanging around,” he growled under his breath.
She looked at the time. Fifteen minutes to get to the station. “I have to go, Derrick.”
He started to protest, but she cut him off with a finger over his lip.
“Let me go, please Derrick,” she pleaded. It wasn’t just for a physical release, but so much more.
Reluctantly, he got out the car and watched her drive away.

Teach Me To Love Chapter 13 Part 1

Okay, I started on this not really intending to finish, but then I thought I'd leave you with a little bit more since you guys are really fast readers.

And just in case you were worried, YES, she is leaving Davenport FOREVER, so don't ask me if she might be coming back for Derrick. YES, she is going with her husband.

No calling pestering me over the weekend, but I'd love for you to leave a comment once you've caught up and tell me what you want to happen.

*************************************************

The night before the performance, she laid out a special dress and went to her jewelry box and put the pendant in her purse. For some strange reason, she wanted to have it tomorrow around her neck.
Robert came home early and actually came in the bedroom looking for her. Warning bells immediately went off as she heard him calling for her as he came in their bedroom.
“We need to talk, Rachel,” he said with graveness in his raspy voice.
He looked so old even though he was a year older than her.
Sitting up in the bed, she asked, “What is there to speak about, Robert?”
He sat down on the end of the bed looking a bit lost for words and forlorn. “I’ve decided we need to get out of this place.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean we need to get up to Canada. Just for a while. My mother’s gonna let us stay there.”
There was something else, but he wasn’t going to say. She insisted. “Robert, what is going on?”
He stood up in anguish. “I took out on a loan and I can’t pay it back. I took the policies you had on the kids and got a large amount advanced to me, but there is no way we’re going to be able to pay it back.”
Incensed, she seethed, “How could you do something like that?” She stomped her foot very upset. “It wasn’t yours to gamble away, Robert!”
“Shut up!” he seethed. “I don’t need your motherfucking nagging.”
The severity of this was too much for her and she slumped on the bed not sure what to do, think or even feel. “What about my job? What am I supposed to do, just leave?”
“You’re going to have to,” he said, without the least bit of pity or understanding.
“How much time do we have?”
“None. We need to get out of here by tomorrow.” He shoved a ticket in her hand. “My mother sent me the money. Take all the important papers you have and pack them up with the clothes that you need.”
“What about the furniture and stuff? We have to store them-“
He cut her off. “We don’t have time!” he stressed. “Just take what you can pack in a suitcase and the babies stuff. I brought boxes. Our train leaves tomorrow night.”
Rachel looked at the ticket. Two hours after show time in the early evening. This was happening too fast. Ws this in Derrick’s plan of fate? “But...my class. I have my performance tomorrow afternoon and I have to talk to my principal.”
“Then you better stay up tonight and get what you need done, because I want your ass and my children on a train tomorrow with me to Canada.” He jerked at her arm harshly digging his fingers in her skin making her wince in pain. Don’t fuck with me on this, Rach. Don’t you dare think you’re going to leave me stranded in this fucking mess by myself. If they try to take me down, you’re coming with me.” He threatened grievously.
He released her roughly sending her back on the bed and storming out the room.
Checking the time, it was only nine in the night. She didn’t know Derrick’s home number, but she could get in touch with Tonya. No...she couldn’t call him. She had to wait and tell him with the other students when she saw them tomorrow.
She could call Austin tonight and let him know of her quick resignation. It would be called a family emergency. Austin thought it best not to let everyone know that she probably won’t be coming back. Her students had become quite attached to her and he felt her permanent departure would make them rowdy again.
“I want to leave that window of opportunity to come back with them,” Austin said over the phone.
Rachel didn’t’ feel right with this, but she was going to tell Derrick the truth as soon as she had time in the day to get him alone. Staying up almost the entire night, Rachel was able to pack the car with boxes that were to be shipped in the mail to Robert’s mother’s house.
Since Austin told her he was only going to require her to bring in school property like her laptop, badge and keys, she knew she wouldn’t be required to teach, but the performance was at the beginning of seventh hour and she wouldn’t miss that.
Making arrangements with Mrs. White to have the twins at the train station on time with Robert, Rachel stayed to make sure her students went on as planned. They did so well, she almost cried as they took their final bow. The audience loved it and Justas she wished, they won first place.
Austin quieted the crowd down after he presented the classroom trophies. Earlier that morning when she had come to bring her items, he had given her a wonderful recommendation and told her he would announce to the school of her “family leave.”
She looked worriedly over at Derrick who caught the expression on her face and frowned as Austin spoke.
“Mrs. Rachel Herlong, has been a wonderful teacher, for all of us,” Austin said on his long speech of praises to Rachel.
Sneaking another peek at Derrick, she watched him mouth the words, ‘What is going on?’
Yet she didn’t respond on him. She looked away sorrowful unable to say the words that she knew would hurt him.
“...sad to see her leaving us for a while on an emergency family leave...” Austin continued.
Her students murmured or more like panicked coming around her asking her what happened, what was going on. She didn’t know what she really said to them, because as she looked to the back of the crowd that wished her well and hoped for her safe return soon, she met those cold brown eyes of Derrick’s for a long moment before he walked out the nearest exit. Rachel happened to look over at Austin, who witnessed the whole thing and she tried not to show so much emotion.

Teach Me To Love Chapter 12 Part 5

This will be the last before the weekend and then go from there on Monday.

Have a good weekend and I hope to have you back just as eagerly.

Enjoy....

********************************

The next week after practice, she found Derrick standing outside there alone waiting for his ride. Again, Rachel offered, “Would you like to sit in my car?”
He smiled knowingly and followed her to the car. When they were inside, he immediately asked, “What do you plan on doing after all this?” he asked.
          “After what?”
“After you teach yourself in the ground?”
Shrugging, Rachel said, “I don’t... well, that’s a lie. I do know. I want to open up a center for single parents - Ones who didn’t have the chance to get their education before they had children and the ones who are trying to get their education and they need help. I think I could do a lot with the center as far as mental health and so forth.”
“What would you know about single parenting?” he asked in challenge.
“Enough. I feel like one with all the parenting Robert does. I hope to go back to school and earn a higher degree in psychology or social work.”
“That’s a lot of work, Rachel,” he said worriedly. “You’re already wasted away to almost nothing.”
True, she had dropped down to a size twelve, although there was still some tummy left and hip, but she didn’t feel she had wasted to nothing. “You’re exaggerating, Derrick, or either that or trying to blow my ego up. I do thank you for that,” she said with a playful wink. “Why do we always talk about my life, Derrick? Are you happy?”
There was a bothered look in his eyes, before he said, “Never, but I pretend that I’m not where I am until I can be where I want to be.”
She had to admit they made a weird pair by doing the same thing in unhappy situations. “What’s so unhappy about your life, Derrick?”
“My mother, I suppose. Being with her and seeing her character makes me sick.” There was disgust and pity at the same time in his voice. “I watch her trudge around through life doing my stepfather’s biding. She depends on him to make her happy, hoping that he’ll change.”
Rachel could almost understand the woman she had never met. Was that what attracted Derrick to her? Because her life closely resembled that of his mother’s?
He continued, “He abuses her when I’m not around.”
          “How do you know that?”
“Because I see the marks on her face where he’s made a mistake and hit her. She tells me she’s fallen or she’s clumsy, but I know the truth.” Vehemently, allowing his anger to show, he said, “I’ll kill him next time I know he’s touched her wrong.”
Placing a hand over his, she tenderly drew his conscious back to her. Her touch startled him out his anger and he looked at her intently. “You love her though, Derrick?”
“Very much. She is my mother. That’s why I want to protect her. I want her to be happy. I don’t want her to end up... I don’t know. I can’t describe it, but I know if she continues like this she won’t be herself anymore. She’ll be some empty shell living day to day like a zombie.” He leaned in close to her until their breaths mingled together and his voice turned into a whisper. “Do you find yourself being lost in him? What power does he hold over you, Rachel, that I can’t defeat?”
“I wasn’t destined to be happy, Derrick. Can’t you see that?” She couldn’t stop tears as they rolled down her cheek.
He shook his head. “You were destined to be a wonderful woman for a good man. Maybe in the beginning you only saw what was yet to be in Robert. You need a man who already is. Any great man in this world can see that you are a woman who they should be honored to have by their side. I see it.”
She moved away fighting the force that wanted to draw her close to him again. “Your words are sweet, but I can’t believe them. Nothing in life has ever gone my way no matter how hard I’ve worked. Let me be happy with this little happiness.”
There was a pregnant silence between them.
In the stillness, he whispered, “After next week we won’t see each other as often unless passing in the halls, when I have to address you as only my teacher.”
“That will be good for both of us.”
“”Why?” he glared at her. “When I need your closeness? From the time I open my eyes in the morning, until I close my eyes at night, I crave to see your face everyday, Rachel.  I wish you could lie beside me at night and I could hold you in my arms and whisper gentle words of how much I love you in your ear to soothe all the pain in your hear-“
Covering her ears and closing her eyes, she said, “Derrick, stop! Please stop.” Looking at him deeply, she covered his mouth. “It’s taken so much not to give in. Don’t weaken me again, please.”
He conceded. “Fine, Rachel. I won’t speak my heart to you anymore, but you know. You will always know I love you.” Derrick clasped her hands in his tightly.
She knew he was too young to see that those words would be forgotten. In five years, he would barely remember the names of his high school teachers. Although Derrick’s words were so nice to hear she couldn’t take them to heart.
The familiar harsh horn blew and Derrick got out of the car releasing her hands. “Goodnight, Rachel.”
“Goodnight Derrick.” She watched him walk away from her car and when he was out of sight, she leaned her forehead on the steering wheel, telling herself that his infatuation would fade and once she was out of sight, some little girl would take her place in Derrick’s heart and everything would be fine.
So why did the thought of another woman in his heart make her feel so jealous?

Teach Me To Love Chapter 12 Part 4

January passed quickly and with two weeks to go before the performance, Rachel forced herself to concentrate on her classes. Her home life was becoming more stressful, but she tried not to think about it.
Robert was drinking more and she found some small plastic Baggies in the living room, while cleaning out the couch that indicated that he was doing more than just smoking cigarettes. There were other things around that gave her indications that he was doing a lot more drugs than what she had imagined, but she had no one to speak to about the matter, because she had no close friends and she didn’t want to go to the police. Keeping everything in was taking a toll on her health, but that seemed the only good thing because she was losing weight from the stress and being too upset to eat anything.
The children were her only sunshine at home. Justin had tempered down immensely and was almost as pleasant as his sister, Jessica, except for his overly curious nature.
Derrick had kept his word and kept his distance. During practice he stayed with Arwin or he was diligently helping out with the production. The students noticed her mind was off a lot and some of them commented on it, but she would just say she had a lot on her mind.
“You wanted to keep the props where they are?” Tonya asked one day, as everyone was finishing for the day with practice.
Rachel checked her watch not realizing the time had passed so quickly. “Yes, Tonya. They should be fine until our next practice.”
“Is everything alright, Mrs. Herlong?” Tonya asked very concerned. “You’ve been spaced out lately and its getting worse and worse.”
“I’m sorry, Tonya. There’s just a lot on my mind.” She forced herself to stay focused on what was going on.
“I don’t’ want to get in your business.”
“I’ll be fine,” she assured the girl and packed up everything. When all the students were gone, she took a moment to collect her thoughts. After locking the auditorium and signing out in the office, she went to her car. Derrick was standing outside waiting for his ride waving goodbye to his fellow students as they all seemed to be taking off and leaving him alone at the same time.
Not wanting him to stand there by himself despite their past, she went over to him. “Will your ride be here soon?” she asked.
          “Do you care?” he questioned.
          “Of course.”
“Oh yeah,” he said sarcastically. “You’re my teacher. You should care, but to a point.”
“Do you want me to stay?” she asked, ignoring his sarcasm.
He shrugged nonchalantly. “You can if you want.”
It was record cold for a January afternoon in Davenport and Derrick had on a light jacket.
Rachel offered, “Why don’t you join me at the car? We can sit there with some heat.”
“Are you sure its safe?” he asked warily. “Your boyfriend Austin might be around spying on you.”
“Has he?” she asked teasingly. “I didn’t notice, but I’m sure you have.”
He growled something under his breathe, but that didn’t stop him from following her to her car and getting in on the passenger side. “Am I not supposed to notice that man’s got the hots for you, Rachel.”
“If he does, Derrick, he does. It’s not going to change my decision about what I’ve chosen in life and I won’t cheat on my husband.” Looking him up and down, she added, “No matter what temptation offered.”
He calmed down. “You want to tell me what is going on with you then if it’s not him.”
“That’s what you thought? You thought he and I were doing something?”
“Forget what I’ve been thinking, Rachel. I’m talking to you like a friend. You need that, don’t you?”
Gripping the steering wheel and looking forward, she said, “I need a lot of things right now, Derrick.” Biting her lip, she fought the urge to admit how much she needed a friend.”
“Rachel, you know I can keep business to myself,” he urged.  “Tell me before I go crazy seeing you like this.”
She could hear the serious concern in his voice and looked his way. “It’s my husband, Derrick. Do you really want to hear that?”
          “I said I’m your friend.”
“I think he’s using drugs and ...” Running a hand through her head in frustration, she continued, “I don’t want to be with him anymore. I know I don’t, but I don’t know why I stay.”
          “The kids?” he guessed.
“I want a family for them, but I don’t want to sacrifice my happiness for it all.” Closing her eyes, fighting not to cry, she admitted, “I’m so alone there. This is not what I thought my marriage would be like. I thought he would at least try to make it better for us.”
          “Does he still love you?”
“I wouldn’t know. He hasn’t touched me since I had the twins.” This was a mistake to admit to him, but she had to tell someone before she went crazy.
“How long are you going to allow yourself to be this unhappy?” he asked.
Rachel shook her had. “I refuse to think about divorce, Derrick, but that’s so hard to do when I’m so alone and miserable.” She touched her chest as if there were physical pain, but it wasn’t. Still she felt a dull ache that was indescribable.
A horn honked and Derrick reluctantly got out. “See you next week, Rachel.”
To admit that she didn’t want him to leave, but knowing he should before... Rachel forced an appreciative smile to her lips. “Thank you, Derrick.”
          He only nodded and left.

Teach Me To Love - Chapter 12 Part 3

Flabbergasted and too speechless to ask any more questions, Rachel slowly sat down needing some air. What the hell happened? Why would he do something so stupid?
“I was thinking about moving your room anyway until the construction of the school is over with,” Austin said. “I think you’d be safer-“
She cut him off “I’m fine. I’m okay up here and I like this room, Austin. Please don’t move me. My students and I can practice without disturbing other classes.” After a moment of silence, she asked, “What will happen to him?”
“I’ve spoken to his probation officer and he is thinking of having him to the detention center.”
Speaking in Derrick’s defense, she said, “But having sex with an older woman doesn’t mean he broke his probation. It’s not as if he was the adult in this.”
“Only the temptation,” Austin murmured in disgust.
“Is that why you transferred him? You think I feel something for him?”
“You’re young. There’s too much of a temptation,” Austin said.
Trying to bring some humor to this situation, she asked, “Do you really think if I haven’t cheated on my husband with you, what makes you think I’d risk my marriage and my job with a student?”
Austin chuckled at her attempt at levity in this whole situation. “What do you want me to do with this student, Rachel?”
Knowing she had reached him and he was giving her the upper hand in this situation, she said, “Why don’t you call that probation officer back and tell him the school can handle this matter just fine. Keep Derrick where he is and just warn him that any more attempts to seduce any other staff member – if he is so inclined to - will be terms to get him out of here. He’ll get the message and be a good little boy until we can get him out of here.” Rachel had a feeling that Austin was waiting for her to say to put Derrick back in her class, but she wasn’t going to, although she was still perplexed at how Laura had come up with that accusation that was so close to the truth.
Austin nodded and left the room, giving her time to gather herself. It was going to be a long day.

* * *
She stayed late to finish grading papers and by the time she choose to leave the place was pretty much shut down, except for the night janitor who offered to walk her to the car. Rachel told him she would be find and gathered her bags and walked through the parking lot alone with her ears opened for any trouble.
As she was placing her bags in the back of her car, a hand covered her mouth and a body pressed behind her.
“Did you miss me?” a deep voice asked behind her.
She turned around and looked up into Derrick’s deep brown eyes of amusement. Desperately, she fought the urge to hug him and hit him at the same time. Holding her hands in front of her this prevented him from pressing any closer.
“What happened, Derrick? What is this business about you and Laura?”
          He smirked. “You sound jealous.”
Rachel didn’t want to play games with him. “It’s too late to even stand here and try to go on about this, Derrick. You warned me there were sacrifices to make to ge twhat you want. I still don’t understand? Having sex with Laura gained you what?”
Derrick became serious. “All of that gained me my grades that I rightfully earned. I agreed to meet her for an encounter that she’d been hounding me about doing. In return for meeting her she said she would make sure the principal and other school officials could arrange for me to retake the GED. She also said if I met her, she would make sure my real grades were discovered that Davish was trying to hide.” He smiled triumphantly. “I then arranged with some friends to Davish up to his office at the same time of our encounter once I was assured she did what I wanted her to do.” He pulled out a paper from Austin and gave it to her. “Not only was I given an apology by those teachers who didn’t give me my rightful grades, but that principal said to me personally that if I keep my grades up by March, not only will I be able to retake the GED but I’ll get a recommendation from him. That’s the sacrifice I made,” he said vehemently.
“Then you’re a fool to make such a stupid sacrifice,” she said, showing her upset. “She took the credit for all that?”
“Yes, she made it all happened so that I would let her do that to me.”
Rachel should have known that Laura would try something like that, but she would have never guessed that it would get to the point of blackmailing Derrick for sex. Snorting, she said, “That credit wasn’t hers to take, Derrick! I did all that work!” She sobbed feeling grievous from the long stressful day and now this.
He tenderly drew her into his arms despite her weak effort to push him away. Soon Rachel gave in and leaned into his broad shoulder and cried.
Softly, he said, “I didn’t know. I’m sorry.”
“You could ... have just asked if you needed that kind of help, Derrick,” she said through her tears.
“I didn’t think anyone wanted to help me like that. I didn’t think you’d go that far to jeopardize your job with Davish for me and it wasn’t my right to ask or make you try. I mean you didn’t want to be with me so I figured you wouldn’t do something like that.”
“Being your lover is very different from being your teacher and friend. I like you very much as a student and a friend, Derrick,” she admitted.
Derrick sighed feeling terrible. “I wasn’t sure. I’m not use to being liked without strings attached. You forgive me, Rachel. I’m young, remember? I’m entitled to make stupid mistakes.”
Rachel knew he was only trying to make her feel better. “Don’t play that young card to your advantage now,” she said wiping her eyes, using the back of her hands. “I was born at night, not last night.”
A hoot of laughter escaped him. “Does that mean you forgive me?”
“No, Derrick, that’s going to take some time because I shouldn’t be angry at you in the first place.”
“There’s nothing wrong with what you feel towards me, Rachel.” That serious light came to his eyes again.
“Please don’t go there, Derrick.” Gently, she pushed away from him and he released her reluctantly. “I’ll see you tomorrow, right?”
“How? I’m not in your class and I’m prohibited from stepping foot on the third floor.” There was a strange look in his eyes and she had a feeling he wasn’t scared of Austin’s warning; Derrick just wouldn’t get caught.
“Because I left word with your new homeroom teacher to allow you to come to the auditorium once a week at the end of the day to join us for practice.” She got in her car and rolled down her window to continue to speak to him, while she warmed up her engine. “The principal approved because he understood that we couldn’t possibly put on a performance without our writer and director.”
Derrick raised a curious brow. “And you? Do you need me, Rachel?”
As much as she wanted to admit it, she wouldn’t. Instead, she asked him, “Why would Laura guess so close to what was really going on, Derrick?”
He flushed embarrassed and admitted. “I made a mistake when I was with her.”
“What mistake did you make?” she asked confused.
“I called out your name in the heat of the moment.”
Rachel blushed at that admission, but forced herself not to show it that much.
“Are you avoiding my question?” he asked, leaning in the window.
          “Yes, Derrick, I am. Goodnight.”
He moved back so that she could drive away.
