Instead of going home, as soon as she got in the car, she told him quietly to drive over to Grace’s home. Jason gave her a look as if she really shouldn’t see Grace, but he didn’t know what she was feeling inside and she just knew she couldn’t explain it to him. He was like her best friend, but she really needed a woman’s voice right about now.
Usually she had Katrina to speak to, but with that completely unavailable to her and Noel wouldn’t care a flying fuck, she went to the only person she knew who would listen.
Their drive was quiet filled with quiet sobs from her direction and Jason gripping the wheel like he wanted to turn the truck around and knock that man’s head in.
When he pulled up in front, Jason asked, “Talk to me, Syn.”
“Sick all over,” she said sadly, but that wasn't the whole truth. Even though she knew who Colin was and should hate him, she couldn’t stop thinking about who he was before all this. Synthia found she had this evil joy in the pit of her stomach that wouldn't go away.
“For what it’s worth I don't hate you for what you did with him, Syn and I don't want you to hate yourself either.” In his own quirky way, her brother was trying to offer her comfort. He even looked remorseful towards her.
“I'll try not to.”
“And you were right about putting it all behind us. I’m almost glad you stopped me, because I would have killed him. Are you sure you want to be over here?” he asked yet again.
“Grace has always had an open mind and I’m sure you’re can attest she doesn’t mind being used when we’ve missed Trisha the most.”
He looked very offended. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You tell me.” She was glad she could focus on other drama that wasn’t her own miserable agony she was suffering deep within, but she wasn’t going to let him know that. “Are you going to try to convince me again that you and Grace didn’t sleep together when you were drunk that night right after Trisha’s funeral. I saw you coming out of her room half naked.”
“I threw up on all my clothes you nosey heifer,” he sneered and changed the subject. “I figure Grace’s the last person you want to speak to.”
“Right now I just need a friendly face that gets me close to Trisha. Grace has an open heart.”
“So do I. I could buy you a large gallon of Jerry Garcia and Nuvo to make you forget,” he cajoled.
She rolled her eyes hating that her brother knew her dessert and alcohol vises so well. Plus I don't plan on telling her everything. And I appreciate you keeping your mouth closed as well,” she warned.
Jason only shrugged and followed her to the house.
To their amazement the door opened before they even knocked. Grace stood there with her bright brown eyes wide and overly excited to see them.
“Hello,” she said and they knew she had run to the door because she was slightly out of breath.
"Hi,” they said simultaneous.
The odd thing that separated Grace from Trisha was her height. Trisha was Synthia's height of five foot eight, while Grace was four inches below that.
At fourteen, when Trisha decided to lost her virginity her parents found out and put Grace on birth control too. Her parents and Grace didn’t know the side effects and Grace ballooned to over two hundred pounds. Thought they were twins, by the time college came there was no doubt confusing which sister was which. After her sister’s death suffering and through her mother’s death as well, plus taking care of her father, she had lost over sixty pounds, but had the fullness all in the right places.
Cocoa skin all over with hair to match she had a soft beauty like the movie star Essence Atkins.
“You look great,” Synthia said hugging her as Grace as they were let in.
After Jason gave her a brother hug, Grace asked suspiciously, “Now what do I owe the pleasure of the two most beautiful people in Detroit gracing my presence?”
Jason and Synthia looked at each other as if the others were going to speak.
Synthia decided she'd better not leave it up to her brother. “I took the day off for some other business and it was done earlier than I expected so I asked Jason to bring me over. I know the memorial is next week and you have to get the house in order.”
Grace hugged her again in appreciation. “Thanks, Synthia, but you really didn’t have to. I just have a little to do actually since the maid service I hired keeps the place pretty tidy for my father. As long as no one’s going into the basement where my office is, we’re good to go.”
Grace’s home graphic and computer design business was in the basement and she rarely left the house for anything. She even had groceries delivered. Ever since Synthia had know her, Grace had been a home body and someone who mostly kept to themselves. She didn’t seemed to have body issues or even looked like she really cared about her appearance since most times she wore dull gray jogging suits and sandals.
“Since that sounds like it involves housework that's my queue to leave. I can pick you up later, Syn,” Jason said after kissing Synthia on the cheek. “Do you need me to stay?” He was earnestly asking her for more than normal reasons, but Grace didn't know this.
“I'll be fine, she assured him giving him a knowing look. I can find my own way home.”
“I'll take her,” Grace said eagerly.
“Thanks Grace,” Jason said, moving over to her.
She blushed from his direct gaze and Synthia was used to women suddenly becoming coy around her brother, but unlike other women Grace knew Jason was not attracted to her and the coyness wore off after a second. “You're welcome, Jay. You take care off you,” she said reaching up and touching his cheek tenderly as if they had suffered through a hard moment.
Jason pulled her in an embrace and whispered something in her ear before he left.
Synthia could tell her brother was very troubled, but she didn’t stop him from leaving, yet her curiosity was piqued and she started to ask Grace, “Why didn't-“
Grace cut her off. “He's still in love with Trisha, Syn.” Her tone was obvious. “He wouldn't be in love with me, he'd be falling back in love with her. When he looks at me, he's seeing her.”
“But that look he just gave you,” Synthia pointed out. “I could have cooked eggs with that look.”
“It’s the man's that’s heart is torn to pieces. Don't get me wrong, Jason's a guy I'd be honored to have, but I need someone who hasn't been enchanted by my sister.”
Synthia never realized how difficult Grace had it until now and really felt bad for her.
Grace looked back at her. “Please don't feel bad for me. My sister was popular only for her sparkling personality. Noel had it ten times worse. She was behind a sister with the great personality and the drop dead gorgeous face. Not only did men want to be with you, women wanted to be like you. Now that's a shadow I wouldn't wish upon my most hated sibling.”
Synthia slumped in a chair nearby of the impact her sister had to carry around being less all her life or not being good enough. “I didn't ask for this face.”
“Of course you didn't,” Grace said sympathetically.
“And I can't help if I have a good personality.”
Grace walked out the room towards the back of the house where the laundry room was at while they spoke.
Synthia knew the house by heart. In her youth, she had spent just as much time here as she had done her own home.
“Can't fault you for that either.”
Defensively, Synthia said as she helped Grace remove the clothes from the dryer and folded
them, “And I’ve never been viciously cruel to Noel. I've been nice to her. Even when she's acted like a spoil bitch, embarrassed me in front of clients and have run up bills in my name. I've given her money whenever she's asked for it. Most times no questions asked.”
Grace stopped what she was doing. “What's this about?” There was this knowing look in her eyes as if she already knew the answer to the question and talking any more would be futile.
“I think my sister may be trying to make my life miserable. I think she’s trying make my life miserable.”
“Noel,” Grace asked as if Synthia had another sister.
Sarcastiscally she said, “No, I meant Trisha.”
Grace frowned very disturbed by Synthia's confession. “Why don't you start from the beginning
and tell me everything, Synthia so I can understand what’s going on because that’s a very serious accusation, which I think has no bearing on Noel.”
“You don’t know Noel.”
“No, Synthia, you don’t know Noel. Now stop trying to protect me from whatever you and Jason were mind speaking about and tell me everything,” she demanded.
“I don’t think I should, Grace. I think you'll hate me when this is all over with if I tell you everything.”“Let me be the judge of that,” Grace sad.

oh wow oh wow. sorry for being so silent! school, work, family, life has been getting in the way! i am sorry about your dad and i hope he gets better. oh wow syl... the bombs you drop they are bigger than anything! i knew he had something to do with that accident after you posted that chapter. colin is a very complex person and i dont think synthia deserves him either... i'll comfort him anytime!!! and is noel the one behind nasty coochie trina and george getting together? that is a shame. grace seems like a nice girl who understands noel more.. they must be very close since they were the sisters in the background.. now that i can relate to. i wanna hear more about his past and what he's going to do with frank's father.. is he going to be distributing? supplying?? dealing?? lol... an irish drug dealer... (smdh)
My guess is Grace and Noel must have a bond because how she said "You don't know Noel." Question Sylvia? The story with Grace will Jason be the man for her. I hope so or Jason should have his own story. What ever happen to the conniving friend of Syn. Maybe she's on the cruise with George. This is crazy. The pieces are starting to fall into place.I have to keep some secrets to myself.
It's one thing to envy or be jealous of your sister and another to attempt to destroy her. Luckily Syn wasn't that into George. If Noel spent any significant, quality time with their mother, wouldn't she notice the dementia? Also, I'd like a reason to forgive Colin, but too many people are still in pain over what he did. And yeah, what the heck is he up to with Frank?
Thanks for the update. I'm really enjoying this story.
